In 2004, EPA launched SmartWay, an innovative brand that represents environmentally cleaner, more fuel efficient transportation options.
In its simplest form, the SmartWay brand identifies products and services that reduce transportation-related emissions. However, the impact of the brand is much greater as the SmartWay brand signifies a partnership among government, business and consumers to protect our environment, reduce fuel consumption, and improve our air quality for future generations. All of EPA SmartWay transportation programs result in significant, measurable air quality and/or greenhouse gas improvements while maintaining or improving current levels of other emissions and/or pollutants. EPA believes the quality of the environment is everyone’s responsibility; therefore, SmartWay is positioned as a personal choice that can make a difference for the environment.
When you buy a SmartWay certified vehicle or fill up with a renewable fuel like E85, you are helping to reduce air pollution and improve energy efficiency. It’s the smart way to make an important contribution to a cleaner environment and our energy independence. Since 2004, SmartWay partners have saved 50 million barrels of oil. This is equivalent to taking over 3 million cars off the road for an entire year.
Over 2,900 US corporations including virtually all of the nation’s largest truck carriers, all the class 1 rail companies, and many of the top Fortune 500 companies rely upon SmartWay’s supply chain accounting tools and methods.
Small businesses rely upon SmartWay for technical expertise and assistance. SmartWay has provided over $30 million in financing to help truck owners, especially small- and medium-sized firms, buy cleaner, more fuel efficient trucks.
Environmental, state, and community groups rely upon SmartWay’s clean air achievements (16.5 MMT CO2, 235,000 tons NOx, and 9,000 tons PM reduced so far) to help protect the health and well-being of citizens, especially in low-income communities near ports, truck stops, and borders.
The World Bank, the Commission for Environmental Cooperation, as well as the governments of China, Mexico and Canada, have projects or programs that rely upon SmartWay’s technical assistance, methods and tools.
